Blink and you’ve missed Stockport transform into everything we knew it could be. For years its potential has been a topic of conversation, but with major investment works taking place in the town centre and fresh independent shops, quirky cafes and trendy bars in plentiful supply, the prospect of Stockport becoming one of Greater Manchester’s coolest and most sought-after places to live is turning into reality.
Just seven miles south of Manchester, an abundance of transport links back into the city centre is another reason Stockport has seen an influx of potential homeowners looking to capitalize on the borough’s more affordable house prices. However, the exciting plans for regeneration across the town is likely to create a host of employment and investment opportunities alike.
Under the arches of Stockport’s iconic Viaduct is Weir Mill. Originally home to a water powered cotton works in the 18th Century, it is soon to be transformed into a brand-new community by Capital and Centric. Due to the recent state of disrepair, C&C seized the opportunity to restore the mill into a place for people to live and thrive.
Alongside this is a council-backed project to redevelop Merseyway Precinct into a modern and more enjoyable shopping experience, and after only a handful of months into 2023, the welcome news that Marks and Spencer’s new food court is expected to create 70 new jobs for the local economy is certainly a step in the right direction.
Stockport’s Underbanks are quickly becoming a corridor of modern shops, eateries and social spaces leading you to the centre of the town. Backing from The National Heritage Fund and Stockport Council is allowing for sensitive restoration to make use of its original character and bring it forward to modern day use.
If you are looking for hand-picked vintage clothing then Top Of The Town is your go-to. Perhaps you’d prefer a hardback on Stockport’s iconic music scene from Rare Mags – or to hear it for yourself, stroll a little further to SK1 Records and be tempted by their catalogue of classics whilst enjoying a coffee.
Connected to the Underbanks is Stockport Marketplace, a treasure amongst locals and now flying the flag nationally with a host of food, drink, produce and art to experience. Here you’ll now officially find Britain’s Best Small Indoor Market for 2023, home to over 30 traders like artist Kate O’Brien and Polish bakery Sticky Fingers.
Following a 500-person consultation, more pedestrianisation is close to completion along the Marketplace, meaning you can visit Where The Light Gets in for a unique Michelin Star Dining experience, The Bakers Vaults for a spin on the Jukebox and even Dr Feelgood’s for some live music without the interruption of cars.
Stockport is creating its own map with regeneration at its core, and everybody wants a copy. 2023 looks set to provide even more opportunities to get involved and call Stockport 'home' – if you want to get on the ladder and begin your journey, our team are on hand to support you, with a range of exciting developments on the horizon.
