Hopes Carr Completes After Nearly 20 Years in the Making

The vision for a high-quality, modern urban village in the heart of Stockport Town centre became reality last week as the penultimate phase of the Hopes Carr regeneration scheme completed.

Viaduct Housing, a partnership between Stockport Homes and Stockport Council, have transformed a portion of the boroughs oldest surviving industrial area into a vibrant new community that puts people first whilst preserving local heritage. The mixed tenure scheme has been delivered by Seddon and provides 12 two- and three-bedroom homes for shared ownership, accompanied by 2 apartments for social rent.

Cllr Helen Foster Grime, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing at Stockport Council said:

“This successful phase in the Hopes Carr development will provide even more much-needed, affordable homes in a great town centre location. Overcoming the many complex challenges of this former derelict industrial site since we first worked on transforming this brownfield site many years ago has been a huge credit to all the partners involved. I pay tribute to all the outstanding teams involved alongside Viaduct, in particular Stockport Council's Strategic Housing, Seddons, Stockport Homes and Homes England for their superb tenacity and determination. 

Work around transforming and unlocking this brownfield location first started in the early 2000's and finalised under our Master Plan set out in 2009. We're delighted overall this area is likely to deliver several hundred homes in spite of the complex obstacles since we entered the partnership with Seddons in 2006. Hopes Carr benefits from the nearby Memorial Park which council Leader Cllr Mark Hunter opened last year, as well as all the improvements being made to the town centre, including the new transport interchange and retail and leisure facilities, which will be a great asset to residents.”

This milestone achievement is a continuation of the first two phases which delivered 46 apartments followed by 36 new homes, together creating a neighbourhood that carefully resonates with the surrounding buildings that make Hopes Carr’s original landscape so iconic.

Completion of this phase, which has involved land assembly and complex remediation works with financial support through Homes England (Housing Infrastructure Fund & Affordable Homes Programme), now enables proposals for the final phase to be brought forward and delivered.

Customers are set to move into this highly anticipated development, and once welcomed into their new homes, will be able to enjoy the blossoming amenities located just a stone’s throw away.
