It was a real pleasure to meet the Sweeney family at our recent Meet the Neighbour event — a sunny day full of connection, conversation, and excitement as many of our new home owners got to see their completed homes for the first time.
Among the many stories shared, theirs stood out as a powerful reminder of what shared ownership can make possible.
As we chatted, the Sweeney's opened up about their journey to becoming homeowners.
We're so pleased to share their story — one that captures not just the practicalities of buying a home, but the sense of belonging that comes with it.
Their Journey
Mr. and Mrs. Sweeney recently embarked on a journey to homeownership through Viaduct Housing Partnership's shared ownership scheme. For Mr. Sweeney, this move was not just about acquiring property but also about creating a new sense of home for his family after the loss of his father in Ireland.
Understanding Shared Ownership
Shared ownership is a scheme designed to help individuals and families in purchasing a share of a property (typically between 10% and 75%) while paying rent on the remaining share. This approach reduces the amount of money needed for a deposit and the monthly costs of homeownership.
The Opportunity
Shared ownership presented the Sweeney's with a manageable path to owning a home. By purchasing a share of the property and paying rent on the remaining portion, they could step onto the property ladder without the financial strain of a full mortgage.
“For me, it's an opportunity just to get my feet on the property level... this is an amazing opportunity, too good to miss. We are very excited to be moving in and making this our new home.” Patrick Sweeney.
A Brand-New Home
The Sweeney's will soon move into their brand-new property, benefiting from modern amenities and energy-efficient features. The spacious family home comes with high-specification fixtures and appliances, as well as building materials that comply with the latest safety regulations.
Personal Significance
The move symbolised a significant transition for the family. With their roots in Ireland, the loss of Mr. Sweeney's father meant letting go of the original dream of returning to Ireland one day. This new home represents a fresh start and a place for their children to grow up, anchoring their family's future in Stockport.
“I've just lost my dad in Ireland so my original home, as in where I grew up is lost to me... So, we are now making a new home, so this is us having the chance to move on and establishing roots for the family and letting go a little bit, the next chapter.” Patrick Sweeney.
Finally...
The Sweeneys' story underscores the profound impact of shared ownership. Beyond financial accessibility, such schemes offer families the chance to rebuild, find stability, and create lasting homes.
“Thanks for this opportunity.” Patrick Sweeney.
